Marvel Worldwide, Inc. , commonly referred to as Marvel Comics (formerly Marvel Publishing, Inc. and Marvel Comics Group) is an American publisher of comic books and related media. Marvel, founded by Martin Goodman, started in 1939 as Timely Publications, and by the early 1950s had generally become known as Atlas Comics. Marvels modern incarnation dates from 1961, the year that the company launched The Fantastic Four and other superhero titles created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and others. Marvel is a very successful company and has survived for 75 years so far. Timely’s first publication, Marvel Comic’s #1 (October 1939), included the first appearance of Carl Burgos android superhero the Human Torch, with the first appearance of Namor the Sub-Mariner, as well as other features. The issue was a great success, with it and a second printing the following month selling, combined, nearly 900,000 copies. While its contents came from an outside packager, Funnies, Inc. , by the following year Timely had its own staff in place. Goodmans and Stan Lee’s business strategy involved publishing his various magazines and comic books by a number of corporations all operating out of the same office and with the same staff. Such varieties were horror, humor, Westerns, funny animal, mens adventure-drama, giant monster, sports, and war comics, and later adding jungle books, romance titles, espionage, medieval adventure, Bible stories and crime. Goodman began using the globe logo of the Atlas News Company, the newsstand-distribution company he owned on comics cover-dated November 1951 even though another company, Kable News, continued to distribute his comics through the August 1952 issues. This globe branding united a line put out by the same publisher, staff and freelancers through 59 shell companies, anywhere from Animirth Comics to Zenith Publications. Atlas, rather than innovate, took the typical route of following popular trends in television and movies such as Westerns and war dramas at one point, and drive-in movie monsters another point in time, even other comic books, particularly the EC (Entertaining Comics) horror line. Then, after DC Comics success in reviving superheroes in the late 1950s and early 1960s Marvel followed suit. The introduction of Marvels first superhero team, The Fantastic Four, established the companys reputation. The majority of Marvel Comics superhero stories were written by Stan Lee. Lee and Steve Ditko generated the most successful new series in The Amazing Spider-Man. Marvels comics had a reputation for focusing on characterization to a greater extent than most superhero comics before them. Take for example, Iron Man. The character’s name was Anthony Stark, but was known as Tony (Admin1). Tony Stark was an engineer who suffered from a heart injury when he was kidnapped by a group of terrorists. In 1971, the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare approached Marvel Comics editor-in-chief, Stan Lee, to do a comic book story about drug abuse. Lee agreed and wrote a three-part Spider-Man story portraying drug use as dangerous and unglamorous. However, the industrys self-censorship board, the Comics Code Authority, refused to approve the story because of the presence of narcotics, deeming the context of the story irrelevant. Lee, with Goodmans approval, published the story regardless in The Amazing Spider-Man #96–98. But he did so without the Comics Code seal. The market reacted well to the storyline, and the CCA subsequently revised the Code the same year. A series of new editors-in-chief oversaw the company during another slow time for the industry. Once again, Marvel attempted to diversify and achieved moderate to strong success with titles themed to horror, martial arts, sword-and-sorcery, satire and science fiction. Marvel was able to capitalize on its successful superhero comics of the previous decade by acquiring a new newsstand distributor and greatly expanding its comic’s line. Marvel pulled ahead of rival DC Comics in 1972, in the early 1980’s. Despite Marvels successes in the early 1980s, it lost ground to rival DC in the latter half of the decade as many former Marvel stars defected to the competitor. In 1986, Marvels parent, Marvel Entertainment Group, was sold to New World Entertainment, which sold the company within three years sold it to MacAndrews and Forbes, owned by Revlon executive Ronald Perelman. Marvel earned money and recognition during the comic boom in the early 1990’s. One of the reasons for their popularity was the futuristic 2099 line of comics. In 1991 Marvel began selling Marvel Universe trading cards. They went into such a business to diversify out of the struggling comic book industry. Little did they know, that was another dying industry (Musgrove). In 1996, Marvel had almost all its titles participate in the Onslaught Saga, a crossover that allowed Marvel to re-launch some of its primary characters, such as the Avengers and The Fantastic Four, and outsource them to the studios of two former Marvel artists turned Image Comics founders, Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld. The re-launched titles were a solid success amidst a generally struggling industry, however Marvel discontinued the experiment after a one-year run and returned the characters to the Marvel Universe properly. In 1997, Toy Biz and MEG merged to end the bankruptcy by forming a new corporation, Marvel Enterprises. This helped stabilize the comics line. With the new millennium, Marvel Comics emerged from bankruptcy and diversified its offerings. In 2001, Marvel withdrew from the Comics Code Authority and established its own Marvel Rating System for comics. The first title from this era to not have the code was X-Force #119. Marvel also created new imprints, such as MAX and Marvel Adventures. In addition, the company created an alternate universe imprint, Ultimate Marvel that allowed the company to reboot its major titles by revising and updating its characters to introduce to a new generation. This reboot has allowed some of its characters to be turned into successful film franchises, such as the X-Men movie series, and the highest grossing series Spider-Man which is thought of as one of the most important Marvel super hero. But Graeme Mcmillan writes that â€Å"Thor is Marvel’s most important Superhero. † â€Å"In the incarnation that returns as Thor: The Dark World, the hammer-wielding Asgardian lays claim to the role of central hero in whats now known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Just as Marvels The Avengers relied entirely on elements set in motion by the previous years Thor movie, so do events in The Dark World set up threads that will be followed through Guardians of the Galaxy and beyond (To explain more would be a spoiler; suffice to say, stick around for the post-credits scenes this time around). What makes this particularly notable is the fact that, in many ways, Thor is the antithesis of a Marvel super-hero. † (McMillan) Though Marvel has had its ups and downs, they have proved that they can weather any storm. People ask what is next for Marvel, since they have successfully crossed over to the big screen, but that remains to be seen. Of Mice And Men By Steinbeck Success Title: Of mice and men Author: John Stienbeck Category: Fiction Author John Stienbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. His first three books were financial failures and he worked at various kinds of jobs to survive, including fruit picking. His first success was Tortilla Flat in 1935 which was followed by a number of shorter works, leading up to his great masterpiece The Grapes of Wrath which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1940. In 1962, Stienbeck became the sixth American to win the Nobel Prize for literature. He died at his home in New York on December 1968. I found the writing style of this book to be really slack and basic. The English in this book was elementary, very easy to understand and follow. There were definitely no metaphors or similes. The only figures of speech I could find were when he describing the landscape at the very beginning. For the exception of the description at the first, the entire book was straight dialogue between the characters in the novel. One thing the novel was full of though was local color and jargon. Throughout the book he wrote and spelled words as if they would have been said them. He also added expressions and local slang to add to the atmosphere of the novel. I don't really have any major likes or dislikes to the novel. I would have to say I liked it tough. There was no complex plot to figure out or involved characters to understand. The book just told a story. It didn't even explain the thoughts or get involved in the feelings of the characters. They only thing you know is what is spoken aloud. I somewhat feel the author could have done more with the story expand on it or go further into detail of what happened during the story but even though it was so short I still think it is a good book. The novel takes place during the early 40's in the United States. It is based on a fictional story of two men who travel from state, working on ranches and scrounging for money. One of men named Lennie was mentally retarded but incredibly strong. The second, George was explained as Lennie's friend who takes the responsibility of keeping his friend, Lennie out of trouble. The story starts out with the two main characters walking down a dirt road toward their next job. They realized they couldn't make the trip so they decided to spend the night by the river. That night we learn for the first time about one of the major themes of the novel. As George and Lennie sit at the campfire, George tells a story about their dream. He explained in detail about how they were now, that they have no home, anywhere that they belong and that all that they really want is a place to themselves. A place where they could live without anyone bothering them. We only realize later that this place really does exist but it costs too much money than they can afford alone but with the help of an older man who has money saved they realize their dream may happen. Soon after the old man's dog has to be put down, he argues with the other men not to shoot the dog but finally agrees that he must be put down. The story continues with little else happening before the climax. The characters contiune interacting with each other and a few minor incidents happen before the climax. At the climax the main character Lennie who is unweary of his strenght accidently kills someone when he got scared. This killing brings on a mob of men who are set out to kill Lennie for his crime. His friend George pleads with them not to but they leave to kill him anyway. George realizes that they are going to kill him and he feels that if he must die he should do it himself instead of the argry mob doing it. Since he knows already where lennie would hide he takes a gun with him and as he's telling lennie the story of how its going to be when they get their own place where they can live he shoots him in the back of the head before the angry men shoot him. This is what happens but it is impossible to describe the meaning behind it or even why it happens without explaining the entire

Irans Refusal to Release Iranian Americans - Essay Example It involved the detention of dual citizenship holders, Haleh Esfandiari, Kian Tajbakhsh, Ali Shakeri and Parnaz Azima. This paper will recount the issues involved in this detention and the charges levied against these four Iranian-Americans based on newspaper accounts. It will also detail the reaction of US President George Bush and the rebuttals of Iranian officials. The purpose of this investigation is to determine if the detention is actually an Iranian act of terrorism against the US. According to news reports, the detention of the first of the Iranian-Americans occurred in May 8, 2007 when Haleh Esfandiari was incarcerated in Evin Prison, followed by the arrest of Dr. Kian Tajbakhsh on May 11, 2007, who was also remanded to the same facility. Two other Iranian-Americans were also charged, after having been prevented from leaving Iran for an undisclosed period of time. Ali Shakeri, on his way to Europe, was detained on May 8 as well while Parnaz Azima was prevented from leaving Iran when authorities confiscated her passport in January 2007. A brief description of the four detainees follows. "Haleh Esfandiari is the director for the Middle East Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars, in Washington". ("Haleh Esfandiari") She is an expert on Middle Eastern women's issues and democratic development as well as contemporary Iranian politics. She has published numerous papers on the contemporary issues concerning Iran, focusing on the plight of Iranian women. She has a doctorate degree from the University of Vienna and is the recipient of the MacArthur Foundation Grant. She has been prevented from leaving Iran since December 2006 when her luggage and passport were stolen while on her way out of Iran to the airport. ("Haleh Esfandiari") As a social scientist, Dr. Kian Tajbakhsh has published two books, received his Master's degree from University College in London and his doctoral degree from Columbia University. "He is also associated with the Open Society Institute, a non-profit organization promoting public health, humanitarian relief, culture, and local government". ("KIAN TAJBAKHSH, PhD"). Dr. Tajbakhsh worked with the Iranian government on issues of public health in rebuilding communities in the aftermath of the Bam earthquake ("KIAN TAJBAKHSH, PhD"). Ali Shakeri is an Iranian-American businessman connected with Global Estate Funding from Irvine, California who graduated from the University of Texas. He served in the University of California's Center for Citizen Peacebuilding as part of the Community Advisory Board. He is also an active member of the Ettehade Jomhourikhahan-e Iran (EJI) which is working for a democratic and secular republic Iran. Parnaz Azima is a journalist for US government-funded Radio Farda. Not much is available on the career of Parnaz Azima, but Radio Farda has long been a thorn on the side of Iran. It abolished the systematized view on attaining salvation by emphasizing on human faith alone. Thus, for the Reformists, it is enough for man to believe in order to be saved. One of the most influential theologians during the Reformation period was John Calvin. Claimed by many as the founder of Calvinism, he shared some definitive teachings on the nature of man and on the significance of a Christian community. His lectures greatly contributed in the establishment of some religious and socio-political ideologies of today. In this light, we will examine the teachings of John Calvin by highlighting on two important aspects: firstly, his view on the nature of man in relation to the divine intellect; and secondly; his notion of the ideal socio-political community. I. Human Sin and Salvation All of the teachings of John Calvi n are grounded on his unique conception of human nature, which according to him, is corrupt and wicked. 1 As underscored in most of works, the spiritual downfall of man was caused by the sin of Adam and Eve. As a result of this sin, man became spiritually dead. Thus, John Calvin believes that the spiritual downfall of man has made him unworthy to go to heaven, thus, he has to be essentially chosen by God to be saved. The choice, however, depends not on his actions on earth but on the destiny that has been arbitrarily assigned to him by God. In this light, the salvation of man rests heavily on the arbitrary and preordained judgment of God, for He has the right, the power, and the wisdom to do whatever he pleases. This sets forth the central tenet of Calvinism, which is predestination. The catechism of Calvinism is summarized into Five Points (Christ Covenant Sunday School 2009). An examination of each point will help elucidate some of the key issues related to Calvinism: firstly, the inherent nature of sin in relation to the work of Satan; secondly, the justification for the selection of the Elect; and lastly, Calvary and notion of limited atonement. 1. Total Depravity As described earlier, the whole being of man has been tainted by sin—his body, soul, intellect, will, and emotions. And because of this, man has lost his direct relation to God. Sin is deemed to be the activity of Satan. According to the bible, Satan is a fallen angel who lost his status due to perversion. His rebellion to God caused him to become the irreconcilable enemy of God. It can be stated, moreover, that Satan’s nature is marked by lies.2 His basic strategy of falsehood is intended not only to injure God, but also to destroy man. According to Calvin, however, the fall of man is his own responsibility. Although the conception of sin is formed by Satan, it is man that ultimately executed the act. Struggling to hold on, the trio of experienced stagehands- Pigoil, with Milou (Clovis Cornillac) and Jacky (Kad Merad) decide to take over the vacant musical hall, named as Faubourg 36, and produce some sorts of hit musicals. With the arrival of a young talented actress, Douce (Nora Arnezeder), the musical hall is a huge success and Pigoil can share the happiness with JoJo again. During the time, the hostile landowner Galapiat (Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu) ,who is fascinated with Douce, always wants to clutch her. When he later discovers that Douce is in love with Milou, he sends the gang to have Milou killed but they are in a mistaken notion and wrongly kill Jacky. Shortly thereafter, Milou argue with Galapiat face-to-face and Pigoil finally shoots Galapiat to save Milou. That is the confession and Pigoil is hauled off to 10-year jail. The film ends with a cheerless scene of Pigoils returning to the town after 10 years, yet a delightful projection for JoJos success as a professional accordionist performing in Faubourg 36.

Euthanasia - The Correct Choice for Many    Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are words to live by despite any obstacles that any person might endure. A person should live in a constant understanding that life will always have struggles, but one should feel as though their life is worth living. A person has the right to believe that life should always be composed of the capability to be spiritual, physical, emotional, and to be a social being all at the same time, therefore the quality of life is far more valuable than the length of time under any circumstances. Euthanasia is acceptable under the impression that a person will never again, and does not have the ability to live a quality of life. A life filled with quality means a different thing for each individual. For some people as long as they are able to make money, live in a great house, are able to walk, talk, see, and hear, their life is filled with everything they need to live richly. For others, as long as they can be free, be happy and function with a little help from technology (such as pills, or an artificial limb), they are living life that incorporates high quality into their life. For example, Robert Powell, who has permanent paraplegia once said Physician-assisted suicide is contrary to the concept of equality for everyone.
